About: Rants and Raves

A seismic cultural shift has taken place since my first rave in 1995 in Detroit and today. Too much of the original meaning has diluted into a shallow pool of EDM blandness. There are beautiful bright pockets of extraordinary talent, energy and community which are thriving, but they’re way too few and far between. Why? The reasons are extensive, but I’ll name a few; the lack of intergenerational communication and dance music’s explosive growth magnified by social media and celebrity worship culture. Simply put, shit just changes over time.

And though I love (good) DJs, they shouldn’t be the dominant focus of the media or our conversations. The focus of the party is what the DJ sees from the booth. It’s the party itself, the nucleus of it all that gets far too little attention. I started Rants and Raves to  shine a light back on the dancefloor and give it the love it deserves by expressing my observations and point of view. My hope is that it opens up more dialogue between us all in return.

About Tovah Feinberg:

Born in Detroit. Grew up in the suburbs as a ballet dancer with aspirations of making it into the New York City Ballet. I started going to raves in Detroit in 1995. I never could have imagined that lil 16 year old me dancing in asbestos at the Packard Plant would manifest into the danseur and music connoisseur that I am today.

My musings about raves focusing on the party and culture rather than the DJ.
