With Movement fast approaching and Detroit’s beckoning siren song growing louder with each passing minute, I was reminded to make a PSA about glow sticks that's looooooong overdue.
Well of course, it's not just glow sticks. It's glow bracelets, glow necklaces, glow shoes and glow thingamajigs. I can’t believe some of the things that unnecessarily glow these days. I once spotted a person with a glow-aconstricer boa that was obscene. Sparse and cheap neon green feathers brightly draped around their neck. Ticky tacky mess.
Why do people choose to accessorize by way of luminescence? It usually doesn't come off as an intentional fashion choice, so is it an attention thing? But why you’d want anyone to see you waving or wearing plastic toxic waste doesn't make any sense to me at all. Or perhaps for some, it’s an important way to signify that they’re partying, similar to how they’re used at a wedding or bat-mitzvah? Or maybe people think, “I’m lit, so therefore I need a light.” Whatever it is, I clearly just don’t get it. Why schlep around this chazerai that’s so important for a fleeting moment, just to toss it aside to die a (too) slow death in a garbage bin?
