Patience isn’t exactly my greatest virtue. That’s putting it nicely. You know those annoying interview questions like “what do you recognize as your biggest challenge?” Well I'd say hands down mine is keeping serenity amidst turbulence. It can very easily and counterintuitively hold me back. As if I’m running on a treadmill or a hamster on a wheel. My brain is moving at a rapid pace, but I remain at the same place. I clock myself and have made some improvements in my life. But there’s still a ways to go. Let’s put it this way. I need to be more impatient about trying to be patient. Like waayyyyy more so. Eons
My lack of patience applies to sooooo many things. Whether I’m standing in line. Waiting on hold with terrible musak playing. On a stalled out subway car. Reading a book. Working towards a lofty or minor goal. It seems that 92.93% of the time I’m in a hurry. However, I recognize how that can amount to a tremendous waste of energy. Because the brain space spent dwindling where I have little impact might be spent more efficiently on something that has a means to an end.
So just why am I writing this piece? Well…bluntly put, our dance music scene is trying my patience in a way unlike any time in the 29 years it’s been the heart of my life. By miles. There always has and there will also be lots of evolution, ups, downs and all arounds in every branch, aspect and tentacle of the scene. Seasons when there’s a garden variety of parties in full bloom, full of positivity and genius music bursting at the seams. And plenty of eras rife with low lulls that have me lusting for more. There’s a gazillion and one reasons for that ebb and flow. It’s natural and applies to just about everyone and everything in the world. However, what’s happening amidst our culture today feels significantly different and very worrisome
Our community is far more divisive than I’ve ever witnessed it. And it’s not just me. Over the past 4-5 months or so, the majority of nightlife veterans I’ve spoken with are in agreement. I’m certainly no professional pollster, but trust- the diverse range of folks and the similarity of their replies sure says a lot.
